Gilbert Bartholomew joined the RAF in 1926, commanded 18 Squadron during the Battle of Britain, was sent to Turkey to train their Air Force. He was British Air Attaché in China 1943 to 1946. Made Air Attaché to Turkey 1949, he died in plane crash at Etimesgut Aerodrome in August 1949
