Description - All Men Are Brethren by Ian MacDougall

This is the first book to attempt a comprehensive and detailed history of the thousands of French and other prisoners of war (POWs) in Scotland during the Napoleonic Wars. The subject is topical given recent events in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Balkans and Guantanamo Bay. Between 1803 and 1814 prisoners of war (men, youths and boys from almost every country in Europe, as well as some from America and parts of Africa and Asia) were held at locations such as Edinburgh Castle, Perth and Penicuik, where they endured experiences which echo those of POWs in later wars. The culmination of twenty years of research and writing, this book is based on material at the National Archives at Kew and Edinburgh, on diaries and memoirs by prisoners, and on reports in contemporary Scots newspapers.
