GCSE English Literature examiners will award the highest marks for answers which demonstrate an understanding, supported by relevant quotes from the text, of aspects of the novel including the events, characters, themes and historical context. You might be asked, for example, to select from a range of evidence, including apt quotations, to infer the effect of particular language choices and to develop wider interpretations or to explain how Syal uses form, structure and language to develop the action, show relationships and develop ideas.
