Charlemagne (748-814), also known as Charles I, the Great, was already praised during his lifetime as "The Beacon of Europe". He became King of the Franks and in 800 Holy Roman emperor. He not only united the continent, but through his political acumen laid the foundation for its rise. He integrated Saxonia and large parts of Italy into his empire, preserved and renewed the knowledge of the culture of the late Antiquities and early Christianity, sponsored the expansion of trade and transport links across the continent and established a rule of law, which still carries his name.
