Description - Chinese Populations in Contemporary Southeast Asian Societies by M. Jocelyn Armstrong

Chinese populations in contemporary Southeast Asia total some 25 million and make up 85 per cent of Chinese outside China. They represent socially significant communities in all countries of the region. Not surprisingly, they have been the subject of considerable study by researchers of diverse origins and disciplines, with issues of social position and identity a recurring focus. This book addresses these and related issues in light of the new themes of regional interdependence (defined as within Southeast Asia) and international influence (defined as worldwide but with particular attention to China). The book offers new perspectives on the past and present contributions of Chinese to the development of their own contemporary societies in the region, and to the development of contemporary society in China.
The book's four sections contain overviews of the historical and contemporary economic contexts of Chinese presence and contributions in Southeast Asia; case studies that feature organisational, community, religious, and other specific arenas of Chinese activity and identity definition; assessments of past and present resources for documenting the position of Chinese in the development of contemporary Southeast Asia; and analyses of the interplay of local, regional, global and transnational networks and identities.
