Description - Emergency Psychiatry by Michael H. Allen
Psychiatric emergencies are unpredictable and potentially catastrophic. Consequently mental health practitioners of all types in all settings must be prepared for crises like suicidal ideation, agitation and aggression or acute confusion. For various reasons, such crises are becoming more common. Substance abuse has increased while access to both inpatient and outpatient mental health and substance abuse services has declined. This has been associated with a rise in emergency room visits for these problems. Since 1994, psychiatric residency programs have been required to provide an organized emergency psychiatric experience. This volume attempts to meet the needs of both the generalist who must be prepared for eventualities that are rare in most settings, but life threatening in some cases, and the intensivist for whom these situations are common and require some standardization.
