Banque Royale, with Law as director gen eral, and its notes guaranteed by the king The company and bank were combined in 1720, with Law as comptroller general. For a time the system prospered and fortunes were made in speculations, but the over-issue of paper money brought about the collapse of the entire scheme in 1720. Law was driven from France and his estates were confiscated. After his reverses he lived in England some years and then went to Italy, where he died.
