Description - European and Non-European Societies, 1450-1800 by Robert Forster

Twenty-five articles in two volumes concentrating on the complex interaction of societies and cultures initially alien to one another. Conflict was an obvious interaction, but accommodation, mutual adaptation, and institutional and behavioural synthesis were also present. However, the process of social and cultural hybridization was, this text argues, often one-sided in favour of European norms. Nonetheless something called acculturation did develop, albeit unevenly, among Europeans in contact with the land of the peoples of the non-European world.
