Description - Frederick Carl Frieseke by Nicholas Kilmer

This elegantly produced volume is being published in conjunction with a traveling retrospective exhibition exploring the work of Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874-1939). It features approximately 80 paintings pulled from both private and public collections, nationally and internationally. These works are illustrated in more than one hundred color and almost eighty black-and-white plates and discussed in essays by leading scholars of American Impressionism. During the first part of the twentieth century, Frieseke was arguably the most popular of all living American artists. Interest in his work deepened again with the renewed attention given to American Impressionism during the 1960s. Now, Frieseke is being rediscovered as both a major Impressionist and an artist who produced important modernist paintings that fall well outside of the Impressionist label. This catalogue will strengthen Frieseke's enduring relationship with the art-loving public and enrich art historical understandings of the development of his painting over time. In addition to the editor, the contributors are Virginia M. Mecklenburg, senior curator of painting and sculpture at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American Art; David Sellin, art historian and author of Americans in Brittany and Normandy, 1860-1910; H. Barbara Weinberg, curator of American painting and sculpture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
