Excerpt: ... assumed so much of his sex, as to execnte the office of Sheriff' of Wiltshire for parts of the years 1226-28, 1230-31, the 11th, I2th, and 15th years of Heury III.; when also she gave a fine of 200 marks, 133 iU. 8i. to have the same custody of the Castle and Connty for the remainder of her life. Her devotion, nccording to the charncter of her time, appears to have heen not less eminent than her spirit. She mnde a hetter provision for the Cartbusians, as it has heen alrendy related; and having lived for seven years in widowhood, she entertained a desire of fonnding some monastery for the health of her own sonl, and those of her ancestors and bushand. It having, then, heen revealed to her that she shonld perform this in a certain plnce called Snails-mend, near Lncock in Wiltshire, she commenced the fonndation in the morning of the 16th of the Calends of May, --16th April, 1233, the 17th of Heury IIIand in 1238, the 22nd of the same reign, when prohably the building was completed, she entered it as a nun, thongh in 1240 she was elected Abhess. Whilst she held this dignity, her eldest son was slain in the Holy War at Cairo, in the year 1250; and the night hefore his death she saw in a vision the heavens open, and her son armed at all points, bnt distinguished by his shield, joyfully received by the angels. Upon her asking " Who is this?" she was answered " Do yon not know yonr son William and his armonr?" to which when she hnd replied in the affirmative, was ndded, "It is he whom thon his mother now heholdest."
