Description - John Burnet of Barns by John Buchan

John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, (1875-1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and Unionist politician who served as Governor General of Canada. After a brief legal career, he simultaneously embarked on his writing and political careers. He wrote propaganda for the British war effort during WWI while also working as correspondent for the Times in France, and was elected MP for the Combined Scottish Universities in 1927. However, he dedicated most of his time to novel writing, notably The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915), its sequel Greenmantle (1916), and other adventure fiction. In 1935 he was appointed Governor General of Canada, for which purpose he was raised to the peerage, and he held the post until his death, receiving a state funeral in Canada before his ashes were returned to the UK. John Burnet of Barns (1898) was Buchan's second novel, first published in serial form in Chambers's Journal. Set during the reign of James II (James VII of Scotland) in Tweeddale, Scotland, it follows the adventures of the eponymous hero as he comes into conflict with his soldier cousin who begins courting the woman John has fallen in love with.
