The author, however, begs leave to reiterate all that be there said in praise of his Pennsylvania German countrymen, and especially of those named, (nearly all of German descent, ) whose kind and eu couraging words in behalf of his humble work he there thankfully acknowledged. To that list scores of others might, if practicable, now be added.

A word on the vexed and unsettled question of how to properly spell the words of the dialect may not be deemed out of place here: and, im primis, the author desires to admit an error made in the preface to his first work, 's Alt Marik Hans, etc., in sanctioning the view of certain eminent linguists to the effect that the proper mode or system was the phonetic. With all due respect for those of that opinion, it certainly needs no argument now to show its fallacy.
