It's a stormy winter night, and all the animals in a barn are reminiscing about what important "jobs" their ancestors had to do at the manger when Jesus was born. Pippin the pig (whose ancestors were NOT there) doesn't know the familiar Christmas story, and keeps asking "What baby?," "What child?" The other animals basically ignore her, because she's only a pig...but in Jean Little's inimitable style, Pippin saves the day when a woman wandering with a young child gets lost in the snowstorm and needs help and shelter.
