Description - Lermontov Three Plays by Mikhail Lermontov

Featuring: Masquerade (translated by Robert David MacDonald) a fatalistic drama of crime and punishment set in the decadent haut-monde of St. Petersburg after the suppression of the Decembrists' attempt to topple the regime. It tells of a world-weary aristocrat who suspects his bride of adultery, murders her, and goes mad at the revelation that she was innocent. This powerful tragedy was banned as an offense to morals and was kept from the stage for several generations.
A Strange Man, (translated by Stephen Mulrine) was written while Lermontov was still a student, it reflects his progressive attitudes towards serfdom and is strongly influenced by Schiller. Because of censorship, it's first production took place some 25 years after Lermontov's death.
Two Brothers is also translated by Stephen Mulrine.
