Description - Making Managers by Charles B. Handy

This work is based on the Charles Handy's 1987 report entitled "The Making of Managers" often referred to as "the Handy report", in which management education, training and development in the USA, West Germany, France, Japan and Britain are surveyed and compared. The report made clear that by comparison with other countries Britain has neglected her managerial stock. It also made suggestions about how Britain should do more to develop her managers and do it more systematically. In this book, the countries studies in the report are examined in more depth. The cultural and philosophical underpinnings of the practice of management education, training and development are examined and the weaknesses as well as the strengths of their respective systems are identified - showing that Britain is not alone in having to develop her managers in different and more effective ways. In catching up with her competitors, Britain has the opportunity to adopt and adapt their best practices. How far this opportunity has been taken is examined by the authors in this review of changes in Britain's management education and development since the publication of the report.
This is a work that should be of interest to managers interested in managerial staff development and training, management educators and educational administrators and those interested in the international economic and managerial implications of the authors' work.
