Alexis Levitin's translation of the Afro-Brazilian poet Salgado Maranhão's Blood of the Sun succeeds in negotiating the quirky experimental richness of Maranhão's Pre-Columbian, Amazonian, and Yoruba influences with his traditional rhymed lyrics and jazz-like syncopations.
