Description - Men Who Batter Women by Adam Edward Jukes

It is estimated that 40 per cent of men batter their partners. But what sort of men use physical violence against women? Do they have any identifying characteristics? How do they rationalise their behaviour, and what is their self-concept? Most existing published work concentrates on the victim. Drawing on over ten years of clinical work at the Men's Centre in London, Adam Jukes examines the perpetrators of the abuse and the roots of battering in the male personality. He recognises but challenges orthodox (psychoanalytic and culturally-based) models of clinical intervention with violent men, and looks at both individual motivation and the social reconstruction of gender, arguing that battering is part of the continuum of contempt which both men and patriarchal society have for women. He also isolates certain tendencies in these men which lead to abuse: for example, they don't listen to women; they feel threatened when women's behaviour contravenes their ideal; they assume their point of view is naturally right. Most importantly, he explores how depth psychology can be used to treat men who batter women and bring about lasting change.
Containing a wealth of clinical material and case studies, Men Who Batter Women is an important study of what has been established as a major social problem.
