Description - Nueva Vivienda: New Housing Paradigms in Mexico by Jesús Vassallo

In the period following WWII, eminent Mexican architects such as Juan O'Gorman and Luis Barragán pioneered the adaption of a European-American narrative in housing design to their own cultural environment. Seven decades on, Mexico's architects are ready to export their own knowledge and matured idiosyncrasies, and to contribute strongly to a global discourse that is aware of local cultural, environmental, and economic concerns. In recent years, Mexican architecture, and in particular housing design, has experienced a renaissance and gained unparalleled attention internationally. The ideas and ambitions of a new generation of architects are fueled by a housing boom and an increasingly sophisticated urban design culture, which again are being supported by progressive public initiatives. Nueva Vivienda features 27 outstanding housing projects in Mexico from the last 10 years through images, floor plans, sections and views as well as concise descriptions. Scholarly essays offer historical and theoretical background. Completed with three conversations with architects, policy makers, and researchers, the book shares the circumstances that enabled these projects, highlights their designers' new ideas and how they contribute to re-thinking housing typologies in Mexico today. Moreover, it also explores how all this transfers to the context of 21st-century architecture in Europe, the United States, and beyond.
