Description - On Education by Harry Brighouse

What should education be for? This excellent addition to the "Thinking in Action" series focuses on this timely and controversial question. Some claim that it should prepare children for work (the 'human capital' argument); whilst others believe education should aim to produce better citizens and make them patriots (David Blunkett). Author Harry Brighouse, who has written for "The Independent" and "Times Education Supplement", argues that such debates miss the point: education should be guided by the moral interests of the children being taught. He asserts that all children share four moral interests: autonomy, self-sufficiency, self-fulfilment and sense of justice, and that policy makers, politicians and parents should have four concerns in mind when determining the content of education. In Part Two, he explores controversial issues such as the funding of religious schools, preparing the child for work, teaching patriotism and how to educate for citizenship, a big concern of Tony Blair's.
