Description - Peace Studies by Ranabir Samaddar
With the publication of this collection of essays, this series on South Asian Peace Studies begins. The first volume is therefore a general one covering a broad range of issues involving South Asia. The essays have looked into ideals and notions of democracy, human rights and justice in the light of social and political realities of the colonial and post-colonial world. In a world characterized by structures of dominance, inequality and received notions of freedom, peace studies have to be of a critical nature. This volume is a collection of such critical writings that have emerged in this region in the last decade. The growing militarization of the South Asian region, arms competition, recurrent coups, ethnic conflicts, brutal suppression of popular movements and the general erosion of civil liberties and human rights have given birth to a widespread concern for peace, thus making this series in general and the volume in particular relevant and timely. The essays in the volume cover such issues as the definition of peace studies, war and conflict situations, and peace and dialogue.
