In 1983 the Indian Council of Social Science Research held a conference on the subject of capitalism. The papers comprising this volume are an outcome of that conference. The themes taken up attempt to bring out the richness of the theoretical ideas of Marx, Keynes and Schumpeter, not so much to advance exegetical/polemical scholarly debates on abstruse questions, but to focus on the influence that their ideas have come to bear upon contemporary perceptions and analyses of social realities. At the centre of the concerns of Marx, Keynes and Schumpeter was the analysis of the economic structure of capitalist economies and their fluctuation-ridden growth process.
