A stimulating collection of visual imagery, Picturing Australia is a volume of stories: of adventure, near tragedy and deliverance, of success, failure and ultimate triumph, that are a testament to the changing face of this ancient land and the people who inhabit it. The selection of images from the National Library's Pictures Collection contained in this volume (watercolours, oils and lithographs) chronicles Australia's history and society; the stories of the people, places and events. Each picture is accompanied by a story, either of the subject, the artist or, even, the remarkable circumstances surrounding the Library's acquisition of parts of its collection.
