This text describes - conceptually - new techniques in quantitative telethermometry based on monitoring the rapid changes in skin temperature in time with a fast computerized infrared camera. Papers are cited that demonstrate the wide range of potential applications for this technique. It also provides a critical review of the conceptual differences between the classical static qualitative and this dynamic quantitative methodology. This work also features a discussion of the history and physics of telethermometry and describes the instrumentation needed for thermal imaging and dynamic area telethermometry (DAT). It reviews the regulation of skin temperature under normal and pathological conditions, including the effect of nitric oxide on skin temperature regulation.
