Description - Society and HRM in China by Malcolm Warner
In this Symposium, we shall look at the relationship between society and human resource management (HRM) both in general as well as in the Chinese organizations in particular. Arguably, HRM did not emerge from the void -- in any of its various national manifestations; it was shaped by the societal culture from which it sprung and the economic forces influencing its direction. Further, we find that much of the research revealed in this collection of studies is not only relatively representative but also highly cross-sectional and specialized. What is missing are studies we might judge to be not only representative, but also longitudinal and extensive in scope. We will argue that it is only in a wider framework that people-management can be best understood, whether we are looking at theory or practice. This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of Human Resource Management.
