Description - Sport, Leisure and Ergonomics by Greg Atkinson

The field of sports ergonomics is now recognised as an interdisciplinary area in its own right. In order to reflect the growing interest in this area, and to publish current research more quickly, the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Sport, Leisure and Ergonomics has been produced in time for the conference in July 1995. International contributors have presented material ranging from the consequences of mass participation in exercise programmes to special considerations of the elite performer. There is also a particular focus on disabled athletes, health and fitness evaluations and sports equipment. Five keynote invited addresses are included in the book. Two of them are concerned with the disabled athlete and with exercise programmes in the workplace. Another looks at how athletes seek the winning edge by means of nutritional strategies in preparation for, during, and recovery from, both training and competing. The last two concentrate on environmental facots that act as obstacles towards reaching optimum performance, such as altitude and the biological disruptions due to international travel.
Following the previous two conferences, in 1987 and 1991, the broad aim of the event is to bridge the gap between the sports sciences and occupational ergonomics. This proceedings therefore provides an essential update of current research findings for ergonomists, sports scientists and health studies researchers and professionals.
