Description - Tamata and the Alliance by Bernard Moitessier

Bernard Moitessier is an internationally-known French sailor, writer and ecologist who became a legend in his own time. He first became famous for his daring sailing exploits which he described in his previous books, such as "Sailing to the Reefs", "Cape Horn: The Logical Route" and "The Long Way". This memoir spans the time from his childhood and youth in Vietnam to the months before his death in June 1994. It tells how the 25-year-old author left Vietnam to answer the call of the sea, wandering the Indian Ocean, the South Atlantic and the Caribbean, learning the ways of boats and the sea and surviving two shipwrecks. Then came the Golden Globe race; during 10 months alone at sea something happened to Moitessier that made him turn his back on a small fortune and fame. He withdrew from the race and sailed to Polynesia where he stayed for seven years with his wife and young son. "Tamata" is Polynesian for "You can do it". It was the nickname the natives gave Moitessier and the name he gave his last boat. The "alliance" in the title refers to the "joyful alliance with nature" which he first experienced as a boy during the summer holidays in Indo China.
He spent his life trying to regain the freedom and happiness of that perfect "alliance".
