The book is about passion, intrigue and gambling. The book is a result of Dostoyevsky's personal addiction to gambling. He gave the rights to this book away to pay for his debts, and agreed to a Draconian contract that stated he would have to pay royalties off of his books for nine years if he didn't finish the book in time. He finished it, and his gamble paid off.
