They were a strange company. No ship since the old Californian days had unloaded so motley a cargo. It was midsummer, but they had left the Klondike at the earliest possible moment. Their be longings were peculiar. What baggage they carried was tied up in old blankets and pieces of canvas with ropes. Hundreds of people who did not know them, and had never heard before of the new land of gold, suddenly attracted, watched them as they came ashore.
