Description - The Russell Lupin Story by Pat Edwards

National Plant Collection holder Pat Edwards records the development of the Collection of Russell Lupins, as well as the history of Russell and others involved in the breeding of these plants. With incredible patience over a quarter of a century Yorkshire nurseryman George Russell improved the form, bloom and colour of the garden Lupin, giving a plant with a strong compact shape, spikes of blossom which stand up to the weather and in a rainbow of hues. They gave such a brilliant show in his allotments that people came to see and admire them and offer large sums of money for seed or plants, offers which were always turned down. This work is described in this booklet as well as how James Baker eventually persuaded him to offer the Russell Lupin to the public. George Russell went on to receive the Veitch Memorial Medal from the RHS. For anyone with an interest in plants this book mixes history with horticulture to produce a very readable account of the rise, fall and rescue of these plants.
