Description - Western Europe by Hugh Clout

This new edition retains the fundamental objectives of earlier versions by attempting to set a range of geographical issues into context than concentrating on their most recent manifestations, and it embraces 18 western states. Texts, maps, diagrams and references have been revised and a new final chapter has been included, which reflects the emergence of the "new Europe" of the late 1980s and 1990s. This explores the enlargement of the EC as a result of the unification of Germany, the almost bloodless revolutions of east-central and eastern Europe, and the important changes anticipated in the 18 western countries associated with the Single European Market and the proposed European Economic area. This study has been written with the economic and social challenges of the 1980s in mind. It is presented in a thematic way and, rather than emphasizing the uniqueness of each of the 18 nation-states of Western Europe, attempts to draw out common characteristics and shared problems, while always recognising spatial variations in their expression. It has been written at an introductory level, and is designed for British undergraduates.
Only a minority of bibliographical items in languages other than English have been included. Each essay is concluded with some suggestion for further reading, while the consolidated bibliography at the end of the book lists a much fuller range.
