Description - Wild Dogs by Peter Skrzynecki

In this rich and poignant story collection, Peter Skrzynecki recreates the recent past, when migrants were still 'reffos' or 'New Australians'.

Although the settings of these stories are predominantly migrant, the themes clutch at all of us. Here are ways of coping with death, with adolescent sexuality, with the power of knowledge, and the quiet heroism of families.

These are stories about differences- there is the boy with the Superman T-shirt who is all too human; the difficult youth who cannot escape his heritage, even in death; the pigeon-breeder, who clings to his White Eagle banner, symbol of his lost Poland; and the teenage narrator, freeing the birds he has bred before beginning his teacher training. Other animals figure symbolically - a red-back spider (in one of the most eerily powerful stories in the collection) and of course 'the wild dogs' of the moving and terrifying title story.
